Read a research paper properly
Save it, reformat it, read it in passes, and keep the one result that matters.
Papers reward a structured approach. This walkthrough combines ReadingTrack's paper support with the free formatter.
#1. Save the paper
Save the arXiv or DOI link with the extension or Add a link. ReadingTrack fills in the title, authors and abstract from the official record, and builds page-cited insights. Set the status to Reading.
#2. First pass: decide (5 minutes)
Read the insights' overview and key ideas, then the paper's abstract, introduction and conclusion. Is it worth a full read? If not, set it to Revisit and move on.
#3. Reformat for reading
- Download the PDF
From arXiv or the publisher.
- Open the formatter
Go to the Research Paper Formatter and select the PDF. It stays on your computer.
- Pick Study Notes
This template puts a notes column beside the text. Skip the references section to save paper.
- Download and print or open on a tablet
#4. Second pass: understand
Read the whole paper. Write questions and objections in the notes column. Check each key idea against its cited page.
#5. Capture the result
- Write your takeaway
The paper's main result, and what it changes for you.
- Add notes
Limits, follow-up papers, where you might apply it.
- Mark it Completed and Worth remembering
It now feeds your review queue.
