The reader

Read a clean, ad-free copy of any saved article, with highlights, themes and offline reading.

WebiPhoneAndroid

The reader shows a clean copy of the article — just the text and images, with no ads, pop-ups or site menus — and records your reading time as you go.

#Opening the reader

  • Web: open an item in your library and choose Read here.
  • Mobile: tap any item in your library.

Older saves may show “Preparing a clean copy…” the first time you open them. This takes up to about 20 seconds and only happens once.

#Reading settings

Tap Aa to adjust:

  • Theme — System, Light, Sepia or Dark.
  • Text size — 12 to 32 px.
  • Line width — narrow, medium or wide.

Text is set in Source Serif, chosen for long-form reading.

#Highlighting

Select text and pick one of four colours from the toolbar. Tap an existing highlight to Remove highlight. Highlights are saved to your account and appear on every device. See Highlights & notes.

If an article is refreshed and a highlight can no longer be matched to the text, it's listed under “couldn't be placed in this copy” so you never lose it.

#Offline reading

On Android, any article you open stays available offline. Turn on the offline queue in Account to download your next unfinished reads automatically on Wi-Fi. Images aren't stored offline. Reading time you record offline syncs later.

#When there's no clean copy

Some pages can't be copied: sites that need you to sign in, pages built entirely in JavaScript, and PDFs. For these, the reader offers Open original (or Open in browser on Android). If a copy looks wrong or incomplete, use Re-extract article from the item panel.

#Claude and ChatGPT saves

Explanations and snippets saved from an AI assistant open in the same reader, with formatting and code blocks preserved.
