Listen and read at the same time

Hearing text while following it on screen helps many readers stay focused, check their understanding and get through long or difficult material. It is also a simple way to proofread your own writing, since mistakes are easier to hear than to see.

Where the voices come from

The reader uses the speech voices built into your device and browser, so there is nothing to install and no account to create. On-device voices work offline and keep your text on your device. Some browsers also offer online voices, marked in the list, which usually sound more natural but send the text to the browser maker’s speech service.

Frequently asked questions

Is this text to speech tool free?

Yes, completely free with no character limit or sign-up. It uses the voices that come with your browser and device.

Why does the voice list look different on my phone?

Voices come from your operating system and browser, so Windows, macOS, Android and iOS each offer different ones. Edge and Chrome add online voices. You can install more voices in your device’s speech or accessibility settings.

Why is only the sentence highlighted, not each word?

Word highlighting depends on the voice reporting its position as it speaks. Most on-device voices do, but some online voices do not, so the reader falls back to highlighting the sentence.

Can I download the audio as an MP3?

Not at the moment. Browsers play speech directly and do not let web pages record it.

Is my text private?

With on-device voices, your text never leaves your device. If you pick a voice marked online, the browser sends the text to its speech service to create the audio.
