How to use the kindle highlights exporter

  1. Connect your Kindle to a computer with a USB cable. It appears as a drive named "Kindle".
  2. Open the "documents" folder and find My Clippings.txt.
  3. Drop the file here, or paste its contents. Pick the books you want.
  4. Download Markdown for Obsidian, Notion or Logseq, CSV for spreadsheets, or copy the text.

Why export Kindle highlights?

Highlights only help if you return to them. Inside the Kindle they sit in one long file sorted by date, mixed across every book you have read, with a new copy each time you adjust a highlight.

This exporter rebuilds that file into one section per book, sorted by location, with every note under the passage it refers to. The result is ready for a notes app, a spreadsheet or a review session.

What gets cleaned up

When you extend or shorten a highlight, Kindle keeps both versions. The exporter keeps only the latest. Bookmarks are skipped because they have no text. Byte-order marks and stray whitespace are removed, and the author is split out of the title line.

Frequently asked questions

Where is My Clippings.txt on a Kindle?

Connect the Kindle over USB and open the Kindle drive. The file is in the "documents" folder. It holds the highlights, notes and bookmarks made on that device, including books from outside the Kindle store.

Is my clippings file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can use the tool offline once the page has loaded.

Can I import Kindle highlights into Obsidian or Notion?

Yes. Download the Markdown export. Each book is a heading with its highlights as quotes, which pastes cleanly into Obsidian, Notion, Logseq, Bear and most other notes apps.

Why are some highlights missing?

Kindle limits how much of a book you can export, often around 10 percent, set by the publisher. Highlights past that limit are written to My Clippings.txt as a notice instead of text. Highlights made in the Kindle phone app are also not stored in this file.

Does it work with languages other than English?

Yes for English Kindle files, and it makes a best effort with other interface languages by recognising the separator lines and location numbers. If a highlight type is not recognised it is kept as a highlight.
