How to use the online speed reader

  1. Paste the text you want to read.
  2. Choose a speed and how many words to show at once.
  3. Press Play or the space bar. Use the arrow keys to step back or forward.

What is RSVP reading?

Rapid serial visual presentation shows words one after another in the same place. It removes the eye movements between words and lines, which is why it can feel much faster than reading a page.

Each word is aligned on its focus letter, a little left of centre, and highlighted so your eye lands in the same spot every time. The reader pauses a little longer at commas, full stops and long words.

When it helps, and when it does not

RSVP works well for short, simple text such as emails, news and practice drills. For dense or unfamiliar material, comprehension usually drops at high speeds because you cannot glance back. Use it to warm up, then return to normal reading for anything you need to remember.

Frequently asked questions

Does speed reading really work?

You can go through text much faster, but studies find comprehension falls as speed rises beyond normal reading pace. RSVP is good for skimming and practice, not for complex material you need to understand deeply.

What speed should I start at?

Start near your normal reading speed, about 250 to 300 words per minute, then raise it by 50 at a time while you can still follow the text. Take the reading speed test to find your baseline.

Is the text I paste saved?

No. The text stays in this browser tab and is gone when you close it.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Space plays or pauses, the left and right arrows step back or forward a few words, and the up and down arrows change speed by 25 words per minute.
